Our Heart For Kids
When a child is diagnosed with a developmental disability, the entire family is affected. The special needs child often has physical, sensory, emotional, or behavioral needs that affect social and community involvement. Thus, the entire family can become isolated from friends, community activities, and church.
King David’s Kids exists to minister to special needs children and their families – offering love, acceptance, hope, and encouragement.
Students from the Hardin Simmons University and Abilene Christian University Communication Sciences and Disorders programs provide speech therapy, targeting communication and social skills training.
Support Groups
Parent/guardian support groups are held bi-monthly during the fall and spring. This time together allows for each person to share questions, concerns, or joyous news. It is a time for encouragement and fellowship. Often, guest speakers from the community come and share their professional advice with the group.
Sibling support groups are led by graduate students of the Marriage and Family Therapy Department at Abilene Christian University. Siblings have the opportunity to receive disability education and learn coping skills for having a sibling with special needs. They also have the opportunity to interact with peers who experience similar joys and trials in their families, as well as receive TLC and undivided attention.
Summer Day-Camp
A summer day-camp is held each year for special needs children and their siblings. The camp is designed for those children who cannot attend a more traditional camp or vacation Bible school.
Activities are highly structured and modified to ensure that each child’s unique developmental, communication, and sensory needs are met. Activities include arts and crafts, Bible stories, field trips, recreational activities, and music. Following summer camp, a parents’ night is held for a time of fellowship.
